Watch the Conversation with Dr. Bill Rhodes About Bringing Life-Changing Surgery to Africa’s Most Underserved Communities
For most of us, surgery is something we hope we’ll never need. But when we do, we expect a hospital, a trained surgeon, and the equipment necessary to help us get well. Across vast regions of Africa, those expectations can be little more than a dream.
In communities separated from modern hospitals by hundreds of miles of difficult terrain, a treatable medical condition can become a lifelong disability. An injury that might require a routine operation elsewhere can threaten a person’s livelihood—or life itself. A child born with a correctable condition may wait years for the care that could change everything.
Dr. Bill Rhodes has devoted more than two decades of his life to changing that reality. A general and reconstructive surgeon based at Kapsowar Hospital in Kenya, Dr. Rhodes travels to some of Africa’s most medically underserved communities, providing surgical care to people who might otherwise have no access to it.
In this special African Mission Healthcare webinar, From Surgical Deserts to Centers of Hope, Dr. Rhodes invites viewers to consider both the enormous need for surgical care and the extraordinary opportunity to bring lasting change.
Watch: From Surgical Deserts to Centers of Hope
A Five-Year Wait for a New Smile
One of the children whose lives Dr. Rhodes has touched is five-year-old Ezadin, born with a pronounced cleft lip and palate in Sudan’s remote Nuba Mountains. His mother, Grace, began seeking treatment while he was still a newborn. At Mother of Mercy Hospital, Dr. Tom Catena explained that surgery was possible. But the specialist Ezadin needed wasn’t there. Grace took her son home to wait. And wait. Five years passed before word finally came that Dr. Rhodes had arrived at Mother of Mercy.
Grace and Ezadin made the three-hour journey by motorbike to the hospital. This time, instead of another place on a waiting list, Ezadin received the surgery his mother had been seeking since his birth. For Grace, it was an answer to five years of hope. For Ezadin, it opened the door to a childhood with new possibilities.

Beyond One Surgery
Ezadin’s story illustrates both the power and the limitations of surgical outreach. When a skilled surgeon arrives in a community where specialized care is unavailable, lives can change. Children receive treatment. Adults regain abilities that illness or injury had taken from them. Families who have exhausted their options discover renewed hope.
But what happens after that surgeon leaves? This is the larger challenge that has shaped Dr. Rhodes’s vision. For years, he and his wife, Laura, have served at Kapsowar Hospital in rural Kenya while also traveling to communities with little or no access to modern surgical care. Their commitment reaches beyond performing operations themselves.
They envision a future in which trained African surgical teams can serve these communities on an ongoing basis. That requires more than medical expertise. It requires training, functioning hospitals, reliable equipment, and the resources necessary to sustain quality care. The goal is not simply to bring another visiting surgeon to a remote community. It is to help create the conditions in which surgical care becomes more accessible and sustainable.
Building Centers of Hope
African Mission Healthcare works alongside Dr. Rhodes and other dedicated medical professionals to help make that future possible. At Kapsowar Hospital, AMH has supported surgical equipment, backup power for operating theaters, and improvements that strengthen the hospital’s ability to provide complex care. Through its Surgical Access for Everyone (SAFE) program, AMH also supports operations for patients who otherwise could not afford them.
AMH has supported Dr. Rhodes’s surgical outreach to underserved communities, including Sudan’s Nuba Mountains. These investments reflect a central conviction: stronger hospitals can change the future of healthcare for entire communities.
A functioning operating room provides more than a place for one procedure. It creates opportunities for medical professionals to develop their skills, for patients to receive more advanced treatment, and for hospitals to expand the care they can provide.
When hospitals are strengthened and medical professionals are trained, the benefits can extend far beyond any single patient. That is how surgical deserts can begin to become centers of hope.
You Can Be Part of the Story
The need for surgery doesn’t disappear simply because a trained surgeon is unavailable. Mothers still need emergency care. Children are still born with conditions requiring correction. Injuries and illnesses still threaten lives. But the future doesn’t have to look like the past.
Through partnerships with dedicated medical professionals and mission hospitals, African Mission Healthcare is working to bring life-changing healthcare within reach of people who need it most. And supporters make that work possible.
Your generosity helps strengthen hospitals, support medical professionals, and expand access to compassionate, quality healthcare in underserved African communities. For children like Ezadin, that support can mean the difference between years of waiting and finally receiving the care they need. For entire communities, it can help build something even greater: a future in which hope is not dependent on the next visiting surgeon.
