At African Mission Healthcare, our commitment to Treating Patients Today ensures that children do not suffer while waiting for the care they urgently need.
Happy, a young boy in Malawi, was born with a bilateral inguinal hernia — a painful and potentially life-threatening condition that worsened as he grew. His mother, Everes, helps provide for their family by selling vegetables while her husband farms. As Happy’s swelling and pain increased, he cried more frequently and could no longer play freely. The strain of his illness affected not only his health but also the family’s already fragile income.
One day, Everes was advised by a fellow beneficiary to seek urgent care at Partners in Hope (PIH) Hospital — the Malawian-led institution led by Dr. Agnes Moses, recently named the 2025 recipient of the Gerson L’Chaim Prize.
Without hesitation, she brought Happy to PIH.
A surgeon quickly confirmed that he required urgent hernia repair surgery. Without treatment, his condition could have led to serious complications, including intestinal obstruction or infection.
Through the SAFE program — and through the faithful partnership of generous donors — Happy received the surgery he desperately needed.
Your support ensured that financial hardship did not stand in the way of life-saving care.
Today, Happy is walking, eating, and playing joyfully once again. For Everes, the surgery restored more than her son’s health. It restored stability, dignity, and hope for their entire family.
And this is where the connection becomes clear:
The same hospital recognized through the L’Chaim Prize for strengthening healthcare systems is also the hospital treating children like Happy today. Investments in surgical capacity, equipment, and trained local professionals make stories like this possible — not just once, but again and again.
This is what it means to treat patients today.
Your support strengthens hospitals, equips surgical teams, and removes financial barriers for families who have nowhere else to turn. Together, we are delivering life-saving treatment today — and building stronger healthcare systems for tomorrow.
