by Dr. Perry Jansen

Christianity Today recently featured the life-saving work of Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Malawi—and the story is a powerful reminder of why strong mission hospitals matter.

In the article, AMH’s Dr. Perry Jansen reflects on a 10-year-old boy who arrived at Nkhoma Mission Hospital in severe heart failure. During treatment, his heart stopped.

In another setting, that might have been the end of the story.

But at Nkhoma, the team was ready. Oxygen was at the bedside. A defibrillator was available. ICU nurses and physicians had been trained. An echocardiogram machine helped doctors understand what was happening inside the boy’s failing heart. And when the moment came, the team acted.

The boy’s heart started beating again.

This was not only the result of one heroic medical moment. It was the fruit of years of faithful investment—investment in people, training, equipment, systems, and a mission hospital that has served its community for generations.

That is the heart of African Mission Healthcare’s work.

At Nkhoma Mission Hospital, trained clinicians, nurses, equipment, and systems come together at the bedside when patients need urgent care.

AMH strengthens mission hospitals so they can deliver excellent, compassionate care in some of the most underserved communities in Africa. The work is often quiet. It involves training clinicians, strengthening hospital leadership, improving infrastructure, supporting specialty care, and helping hospitals build the systems needed to respond when life hangs in the balance.

Bedside teaching is one way AMH helps strengthen mission hospitals—equipping clinicians to diagnose, treat, and mentor others.

But when a child’s heart stops, all of that preparation matters.

Christian mission hospitals like Nkhoma are not short-term interventions. They are trusted, locally rooted institutions that serve communities year after year. They train the next generation of African doctors, nurses, and health leaders. They care for the poor and vulnerable. And they bear witness to the love of Christ through excellent medical care.

We are grateful to Christianity Today for highlighting this story and for helping more people see the importance of long-term investment in African mission hospitals.
