Our Programs
Strategically Changing African Healthcare
Our programs provide life-saving treatment today, train African healthcare leaders for tomorrow, and transform hospitals and health systems for the future.
Mission Hospital Teaching Network
We make long-term investments to develop teaching hospitals from which graduates fan out across the continent to care for and train others. Our Mission Hospital Teaching Network members train students from across Africa, share experiences and benefit from our resources and expertise.
Improving Maternal and Child Health
The levels of preventable maternal and child death in Africa are staggering. To save lives, we build maternity and pediatric wards, renovate and equip operating rooms, sponsor C-sections and repair birth injuries, and train health workers in healthy learning environments.
Combating HIV and Other Diseases
The twin epidemics of HIV and tuberculosis continue to devastate communities across Africa. We provide hands-on clinical training to expand the knowledge of health workers so they can more effectively manage these diseases and medications.
Increasing Surgical Capacity
More than 288 million Africans suffer needlessly from a condition that is surgically treatable. To alleviate their pain, the continent needs 50 times the surgical personnel currently available. We are addressing this need by training doctors and anesthetists, renovating and equipping operating rooms, and providing critical infrastructure like oxygen and backup power.
Providing Surgical Access for Everyone
Our SAFE program and related investments have changed the lives of more than 40,000 Africans. By providing key operations and corrective procedures at 17 hospitals in 7 countries, we deliver both healing and hope to those who would suffer a lifetime without it. Each operation and procedure also compliments our surgical training programs, as talented surgeons and personnel pass on their skills to the next generation of caregivers.
O2 Africa
Oxygen is the most basic and necessary of all “medicines.” Without it, patients die. But 80% of African health facilities cannot provide oxygen to their patients. Through O2 Africa, we install oxygen plants and distribute oxygen cylinders across many countries to ensure patients who need oxygen can breathe freely.
L’Chaim Initiative
L'Chaim is a Hebrew phrase that means "to life." Made possible by the generous support of co-founder Mark Gerson and his wife, Rabbi Erica Gerson, this initiative began in 2016 with the establishment of the L’Chaim Prize for Outstanding Christian Medical Missionary Service. This prize awards $500,000 towards transformational medical projects at the award recipient’s hospital. The L’Chaim Initiative also includes the Mission Hospital Teaching Network and will continue to expand with additional strategic investments.
